The Meta Ads Checklist (2026)

21 CHECKS · BY HOTSEAT · UPDATED 2026-09-25

Meta rewards clean signal and a steady supply of good creative. Work through these checks before you raise budgets. Each section maps to a chapter of our Meta Ads Playbook.

1. Objective and signal

Tell Meta what a win is, and make sure it can see it.

  • One clear objective per campaign

Choose sales, leads or awareness based on the business goal, not on which metric looks best in Ads Manager.

  • Pixel installed on every page

Check with Meta's Pixel Helper that PageView, ViewContent, AddToCart and Purchase fire correctly.

  • Conversions API running alongside the Pixel

Server-side events recover conversions lost to browsers and ad blockers. Deduplicate with a shared event ID.

  • Event match quality reviewed

In Events Manager, send hashed email and phone where you have consent to raise match quality.

  • Domain verified and events prioritised

Verify your domain in Business Manager so events are attributed properly.

2. Account structure

Fewer, bigger ad sets learn faster.

  • Consolidated campaigns

Avoid splitting budget across many small ad sets that never exit the learning phase.

  • Broad targeting tested

Let the algorithm find buyers; use exclusions for existing customers where it makes sense.

  • Budgets big enough to learn

Each ad set should be able to get enough conversions a week to stabilise.

  • Clear naming convention

Name campaigns, ad sets and ads so reports can be read at a glance.

3. Creative

Creative is now the main targeting lever.

  • Several distinct concepts live

Test different angles, hooks and formats, not small colour changes of the same ad.

  • Strong first three seconds

Open videos with the hook, product or problem immediately.

  • Formats for every placement

Supply vertical 9:16 for Reels and Stories and 4:5 or 1:1 for feeds.

  • New creative on a regular schedule

Plan fresh concepts before fatigue shows up as rising cost per result.

  • UGC and creator content tested

Native-looking content often beats polished brand ads.

4. Testing and scaling

Grow without resetting learning.

  • Change one thing at a time

Big edits to budget, targeting or creative can push an ad set back into learning.

  • Scale budgets gradually

Raise winning budgets in steps rather than doubling overnight.

  • Advantage+ tested against your manual setup

Run a fair comparison before moving all spend to automated campaigns.

5. Measurement

Platform ROAS is not profit.

  • Track MER alongside ROAS

Marketing efficiency ratio (total revenue ÷ total ad spend) shows the real picture across channels.

  • Know your break-even ROAS

Calculate it from your gross margin so you know which campaigns actually make money.

  • Test incrementality

Use holdout or lift tests to see what sales ads truly cause.

  • Tag every link with UTMs

So you can compare Meta's numbers with your own analytics.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need the Conversions API as well as the Pixel?

Yes, for most advertisers. The Pixel runs in the browser and misses some events; the Conversions API sends them from your server, so Meta gets more complete signal.

How many ads should be in an ad set?

Enough distinct concepts for Meta to choose from, usually a handful. Too many splits spend so thinly that nothing gets a fair test.

Why is my Meta ROAS different from my store's numbers?

Meta uses its own attribution windows and modelled conversions. Compare against your store's revenue and use MER to judge overall efficiency.
